Fall District convention at Phoenix, AZ, Sept 27-30

IT'S GONNA BE FUN!

Barbershoppers everywhere are gonna be sorry if they miss the extravaganza of contest and show that is set in place for Phoenix on September 28-29.

First, show up Thursday evening for the Jump Start Barbershop quartet contest. Then on Friday the Harmony for Lunch Bunch has arranged a fine feed and fellowship at a great restaurant near the headquarters hotel. There will be classes all afternoon on Friday topped off with our typical FWD list of top quartet contenders for International fame in the newly remodeled Symphony Hall..

After the Friday night contest the AFWDC will have a show in the Hotel Ballroom that promises to be their best yet. That show will be a tribute to Lloyd Steinkamp and will feature recollections of many of his famous antics. There's plenty of room in the ballroom. Do yourself a favor and buy a ticket.

On Saturday we have the marathon of chorus contenders which could send four (Could we count to Five?) units to Nashville next summer. Later the quartet finals will declare a champion.

What will happen next is unprecedented. We have the prospect of having two (count 'em - 2) International champs on a District stage, Westminster and Masters of Harmony. No District has ever had current and returning International Champs before. And all the champs and runnersup are planning "WOW" factor presentations. To top off the evening we'll have an afterglow in the Hotel Ballroom with choruses and quartets showing off."

Weather in Phoenix is on a cooling trend, at least by local standards. With all the restaurants and clubs that populate downtown nowadays you'll enjoy your stay.

So beg or borrow a ride and come on over.

If you don't, you'll be sorry when your friends tell you what you missed.

Jumpstart Quartet Contest at Phoenix

Rumor has it that many of you will arrive on Thursday, so plan on a fun impromptu quartet contest on Thursday evening at the headquarters hotel. You can compete in multiple quartets, as long as you sing a different part each time. The top three quartets will win a shiny medal and our judges are our enthusiastic audience.

So, show up at the Wyndham hotel, Salon 3, at 7:30pm for some Jump Start Barbershop.

AFWDC Show Dedicated to Lloyd Steinkamp

Don't miss this years AFWDC "Late Show," which will be held immediately following the semi-final quartet contest next week at the Phoenix Convention. This year's show is a tribute to our beloved AFWDC member (and director of our own Scorpionaires Chorus) Lloyd Steinkamp.

The show is featuring 11 past District Champs. Yes you read that right...eleven! At least six of them have learned (or already knew) a Lloyd arrangement which they will sing on the Show. The list includes, Nightlife, OC Times, Metropolis, Late Show, SRO, Finale, Freestyle, Kidder & Sons, Inc., Hi-Fidelity, and Q.

Don't miss this event. The cost is $20 and helps our Quartet Representatives at the International Contest each year. If you haven.t already heard, we are also purchasing a new High School Quartet Champion Trophy, and naming it in honor of Uncle Lloyd.

This will truly be a show to be remembered!

Thanks, Nick Papageorge
AFWDC President
